Winter Wedding Flowers: My Go-To Blooms, Seasonal Colour Trends & How to Keep Your Florals Glowing All Day

Winter weddings have a magic all their own—crisp air, candlelit ambience, and an intimacy that no other season can quite match. It’s a beautiful time for florals too,

especially if you lean into the season’s natural textures and soft, moody light.

Here, I’m sharing my favourite winter-friendly flowers, the colour palettes couples are loving right now, and my best tips for keeping your floral impact strong from morning preparations to the very last dance.

My Go-To Flowers & Foliage for Winter Weddings

Winter brings some of the most romantic flowers of the year. These are the varieties I reach for again and again—both for their beauty and their reliability in colder months.

Roses

The heart of a romantic bouquet. Their ruffled petals and warm tones—blush, mauve, caramel or deep berry—create instant softness and elegance. They handle chilly temperatures beautifully.

Ranunculus

Winter is their prime season, which means lush, petal-packed blooms full of movement. They add that ethereal, fluttery quality every wild bouquet needs.

Anemones

Especially the classic white with a dark centre. They thrive in cool weather, and their graphic contrast brings sophistication to winter palettes.

Hellebores

The unofficial “winter rose.” Their delicate, nodding heads and naturally wild structure make them perfect for a soft, gathered aesthetic.

Amaryllis

Bold, sculptural, and wonderfully long-lasting. Ideal for statement pieces, aisle meadows and large installations.

Seasonal Berries

Hypericum or privet berries add richness and depth, creating that moody winter romance.

Winter Greenery

Think eucalyptus, cedar, fir, rosemary, olive. They’re beautifully scented, wonderfully resilient, and create the textured winter base for any arrangement.

Dried & Preserved Elements

Seed pods, lunaria and grasses add a frosted, botanical feel. They’re fantastic for texture and hold up perfectly in cooler temperatures.

The Winter Colour Palettes Couples Are Loving

This season, I’m seeing couples gravitate toward palettes that feel warm, grounded and deeply romantic—perfect for contrasting with wintry landscapes and candlelit venues.

Ethereal Neutrals

Cream, stone, latte, toffee and soft winter greens. Dreamy, warm and versatile.

Cocoa, Caramel & Mocha Browns

The cosy tones of the moment. These pair beautifully with dusty rose, blush or plum.

Burgundy, Mulberry & Blackberry

Still a winter favourite, but now softened with mauve or blush for a gentler, more romantic feel.

Forest Greens & Midnight Blues

Earthy, modern and slightly mysterious—perfect for woodland venues or atmospheric winter barns.

Frosted Pastels

Soft lilac, icy blue and mellow blush with touches of white or silver berries for a truly ethereal winter look.

How to Keep Your Floral Impact Strong on Short Winter Days

With fewer daylight hours and naturally lower light levels, winter weddings need a slightly different floral strategy. Here’s how to make sure your flowers stay the star of the show, from daylight to candlelight.

Layer the Lighting

Candles are your best friend. Pillars, tapers, tea lights—mix heights and styles to create a warm, glowing atmosphere that makes flowers look their best.

Reflective Details

Gold or brass candleholders, soft ceramic vessels and mirrored surfaces subtly bounce light back into arrangements.

Prioritise Depth & Texture

Flowers with dark centres, multi-tonal petals and layered textures retain their impact in dimmer settings.

Think About Ceremony Timing

If natural light is important, consider a slightly earlier ceremony or choose a venue with generous windows. If you prefer a fully candlelit look, we can design florals specifically for evening ambience.

Create Floral “Moments” Throughout the Space

Short daylight means some corners can feel flat. Adding small floral pockets on staircases, entry tables or signage keeps the venue feeling abundant all day.

Design for Silhouette

In evening light, shape and movement become even more important. I love creating archways, meadows and installations that feel dynamic from every angle.

Winter weddings are an opportunity to embrace a rich, romantic atmosphere that’s unique to the season. With blooms that thrive in cooler temperatures, palettes inspired by nature, and thoughtful lighting, your flowers can feel both wild and warm—even on the frostiest day.

If you’re planning a winter celebration and want help shaping your floral vision, I’d love to chat and create something beautifully seasonal for you.
